VIDEO: Rep. Min Introduces Amendment to Oppose Conditions on Federal Disaster Aid
Rep. Min: “I'm disheartened to learn that House and Senate Republicans continue to threaten conditions on the basic aid that Californians need right now. This is something un-American and inconsistent with every other federal disaster response.”
Washington, D.C. — In response to demands from Donald Trump and House Republicans to condition federal disaster aid for California, Representative Dave Min (CA-47) introduced an amendment calling on Congress to oppose conditions on federal disaster aid for recovery from the LA wildfires. Such conditions are unprecedented for disaster aid. Unfortunately, House Republicans would not even allow Rep. Min’s amendment to be heard.
Representative Min spoke about his amendment on the House floor, and his opposition for H.R. 472, the so-called “Fix Our Forests” Act, which would not have prevented the LA wildfires. Watch the floor speech here.
On his amendment, Representative Min said:
“I want to note that I introduced an amendment to make clear that federal disaster assistance to the Los Angeles fire victims needs to be prioritized and must come with no political strings attached. This is something we've done for every other disaster out there in America. When we've had hurricanes in the Southeast, when we've had flooding in parts of the country, California has stepped up. We get 60 cents back for every $1 we pay in tax funding, and so I'm disappointed that we are politicizing aid to California, now that we need it. I was disappointed that my amendment was blocked from even basic consideration.
“And I'm disheartened to learn that House and Senate Republicans continue to threaten conditions on the basic aid that Californians need right now. This is something un-American and inconsistent with every other federal disaster response.”
