Rep. Dave Min Calls on Huntington Beach Educators to Release Public Records About First Amendment Concerns
Rep. Min: “It is our responsibility to stand up for the rule of law and protect free speech in Orange County.”
Irvine, CA — Today, Representative Dave Min’s (CA-47) sent a new letter to Edison High School Principal Daniel Morris and Huntington Beach Union High School District Superintendent Dr. Carolee Ogata, requesting their compliance in providing public records related to the potential First Amendment violations in the firing of Edison High School football coach Chris Kluwe. Read the letter here.
Under the California Public Records Act, the public is afforded the right to access documentation that is in the public record. In refusing to respond by the March 15th deadline, Superintendent Ogata and Principal Morris are in clear violation of California state law.
“I took an oath to ‘support and defend’ the Constitution and the rights it grants to all Americans,” said Rep. Min. “As the Trump administration relentlessly attacks the Constitution, it is our responsibility to stand up for the rule of law and protect free speech in Orange County.”
Rep. Min’s previous letter was left unanswered by Superintendent Ogata and Principal Morris. If they do not provide a written response by April 5, 2025, Rep. Min will elevate this situation to the proper authorities and seek enforcement as outlined by California code.
Reporting revealed that Kluwe, a former NFL player, was fired from his job as a high school freshman football coach based on remarks he made earlier this month when he criticized the Huntington Beach City County for a proposed “MAGA” plaque at the Huntington Beach Central Public Library.
