Dems Getting Salty

May 20, 2025

Some House Democrats are trying to pressure blue-state Republicans on the state-and-local-tax deduction ahead of a planned vote on the GOP’s megabill by asking them to fully eliminate a cap on it.

“We write to you to request that you provide tax relief to our constituents in California by ensuring that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act does not contain any cap on the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, which was put in place as part of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) and is set to expire at the end this year,” wrote a group of House Democrats from California led by Rep. Dave Min (D-Calif.) to Speaker Mike Johnson and House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.). The letter’s signatories include other purple-district Democrats like Reps. Derek Tran and George Whitesides.

Republican leaders have been haggling with holdouts on their party-line megabill over the SALT deduction, with purple-district lawmakers like Rep. Young Kim (R-Calif.) pushing for a larger deduction than is currently included in the megabill.
