STATEMENT: Rep. Dave Min Slams Donald Trump’s One Big, Ugly Bill

July 3, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Representative Dave Min (CA-47) released the following statement after voting “no” on H.R. 1, Donald Trump’s disastrous tax bill:

“This big abomination of a bill is a disaster for Californians and will kill the American Dream for working people. The massive cuts it makes to key lifeline programs, including nearly a trillion dollars to Medicaid (which funds Medi-Cal and CalOptima) and $200 billion to food assistance programs, will kill tens of thousands of Americans. That’s not hyperbole, that’s the estimate of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

For months, I have heard from my constituents about their concerns regarding this bill – as has every one of my Republican colleagues. From a mother seeking treatment for her five-year-old son battling cancer to a doctor worried his children’s hospital will be forced to shutter its doors, my constituents have made clear that the consequences of this bill will be catastrophic.

And let’s be clear: this bill has never been about waste, fraud, and abuse, or streamlining Medicaid, as Republicans claim. It’s always been about finding spending cuts to be able to partially fund the $5 trillion tax giveaway that Trump is pushing for the wealthiest people in the world. This big abomination will cause 17 million Americans, including over 2.3 million Californians, to lose their health insurance, even as it allows Jeff Bezos to afford to hold many more $50 million weddings, in case this marriage doesn’t work out.

And as yesterday’s jobs report, which reported that America lost 33,000 jobs instead of gaining 115,000 jobs as expected, makes clear the lesson we’ve learned time and time again– trickle down tax giveaways to the wealthy don’t trickle down into jobs or wages for working Americans.

Donald Trump’s agenda is devoid of compassion and morality, and this bill is no exception. This legislation will raise health care costs for everyone, force kids, seniors, and veterans to go hungry, and devastate our environment – it is an absolute betrayal of our American values.”
