Rep. Dave Min, Oversight Committee Member and Former SEC Enforcement Attorney, Condemns Alex Acosta for His False Testimony on Jeffrey Epstein’s Financial Crimes
Washington, D.C. — Following reports that former US Attorney Alex Acosta’s office was actively investigating potential money laundering by Jeffrey Epstein, directly contradicting his testimony to the House Oversight Committee, Representative Dave Min (CA-47), a former SEC Enforcement Attorney and Financial Regulation Law Professor, issued the following statement:
“Just over a month ago, as a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, I took part in an interview of Alex Acosta, the then-US Attorney who oversaw the initial Epstein prosecution and was responsible for Epstein’s “sweetheart” plea deal in 2008. As I said immediately after interviewing Mr. Acosta, I found him to be completely non-credible as a witness, as his answers were evasive, obfuscatory, and not believable.
Among other things, Mr. Acosta stated under oath before our Committee that he did not recall any investigation into potential financial crimes committed by Jeffrey Epstein as part of his child sex trafficking ring. The latest revelations from a Bloomberg report that Acosta’s office was actively investigating potential money laundering by Epstein and that it had issued subpoenas to a number of major banks, directly contradict Acosta’s sworn testimony before our Committee, and raise serious questions, not only about whether Acosta committed perjury, but as to how broad Epstein’s sex trafficking ring ran.
As a former SEC Enforcement Attorney and former law professor who taught banking law and financial regulation, I know how important it is to “follow the money” when dealing with major criminal conspiracies. The prosecutors in this case were following the money but this effort was ended when Acosta settled the case and terminated their investigation. We owe it to the survivors and to the American people to continue following the money and get the truth about Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking ring and who was implicated."
