Rep. Dave Min Introduces the SAFE Act to Protect Seniors’ At Risk Social Security Data

August 27, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Following reports that DOGE illegally uploaded hundreds of millions of Americans’ personal data to unprotected servers, Representative Dave Min (CA-47) has introduced the Security and Accountability for Everyone (SAFE) Act, new legislation that would empower individual Americans and State Attorney Generals to take legal action against violations of the Privacy Act.

Rep. Min’s SAFE Act ensures bad actors like Elon Musk are no longer able to misappropriate our private personal data without any consequences. The SAFE Act gives individuals a personal right to sue to enforce the Privacy Act, providing a strong deterrent against the illegal conduct of the kind that we recently witnessed from Musk and DOGE earlier this year, even when the Department of Justice refuses to enforce the law.

Rep. Min announced the SAFE Act on Monday during his town hall with seniors at Leisure World in Seal Beach, following growing concerns from seniors over threats to their Social Security data.

“After decades of hard work to pay into the Social Security system, DOGE’s reckless and irresponsible actions placed millions of seniors’ private personal data at risk,” said Rep. Min. “Americans deserve the ability to hold President Trump and DOGE accountable. I’m proud to introduce the SAFE Act to give Americans the chance to fight back and protect their privacy.”

“At a time where longstanding privacy protections are under attack, the Security and Accountability For Everyone Act of 2025 is a meaningful step to ensure accountability when data protection provisions under the Privacy Act are violated,” said Donald Bell, Policy Council with the Project on Government Oversight (POGO). “The Project On Government Oversight supports the SAFE Act's effort to bolster the protections provided under the Privacy Act.”

The SAFE Act is endorsed by the Center for Medicare Advocacy, Democracy Defenders, and the Project on Government Oversight (POGO). Read the full bill here
